Arizona Scholarships and Grants

If you are a high school student in Arizona thinking about how to pay for college, or if you are already enrolled in an Arizona community college or university, there are a wide variety of scholarships available just for you. Here are a few:

Arizona State Funded Grants

The Postsecondary Education Grant (PEG)

This grant is not based on need and is available to all Arizona students and is designed to encourage Arizona students to complete a baccalaureate program. The maximum amount for this grant is $2000 per year for a maximum of four years. If a degree is not earned within 5 years, this money must be paid back.

The Private Postsecondary Education Student Assistance Program

This is a grant based on student need, and is designed to encourage community college students to enroll in a private Arizona university. The maximum award is $2000 for two years. If a degree is not earned within 3 years, then all money must be paid back to the state.

Early Graduation Scholarship Grant (EGSG)

This is available to residents of Arizona who are currently in high school. This grant is designed to encourage students to finish high school early. If you finish high school one semester earlier than your class and enroll in a college program, you are eligible to receive $1500 paid over the course of two years. If you graduate a full year early, you are eligible to receive $2000 paid over the course of two years.

Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (LEAP)

This is a need based grant that is awarded by nationally accredited universities in Arizona. This program is funded by the state of Arizona and matched by federal funds. The award ranges from $100 to $2500 per academic year, and can be applied for at each school’s financial aid office.

Special Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (SLEAP)

This is a need based grant for sophomore, junior, and senior students with majors that are determined to be highly desirable for the workforce of the state. Maximum award is $2000, and you must reapply for this grant each year. Due to limited funds, you cannot receive both the SLEAP and ACAAP (see below) grants, though you are welcome to apply for both.

Arizona College Access Aid Program (ACAAP)

This is Arizona’s newest grant program, and is designed to help need based students afford higher education. Unlike many other grant programs, this program is available to students seeking either an associate or bachelor degree. The maximum award is $2000 per academic year, and it is not automatically renewable, so you need to reapply each year. Please note that due to limited funds, you cannot receive both the SLEAP (see above) and ACAAP grants, though you are welcome to apply for both.

Scholarships:

Arizona College Scholarship Foundation

The ACSF provides a few scholarships, but their requirements are rather stringent, and you must plan ahead. To be considered for an ACSF scholarship you must be in involved with one of their partner organizations for at least 3 years prior to entering college. You must be a graduate of an Arizona high school and have financial need. Visit the website to see which partner organizations qualify.

If you do qualify, then ACSF has quite a few scholarships available including:

The Helios Scholarship

Provides assistance to students with a strong academic motivation and financial need. This is available for any public or private university in the state.

The ACSF-Carstens Scholarship

If you live in Maricopa County, this scholarship can help. Funded by a William Carstens grant.

The ACSF-GEAR UP! Scholarship program

This scholarship is offered in partnership with Northern Arizona University and provides financial relief to 500 students annually. To be eligible, you must have significant financial need.

Scholarships Offered by Privately Operated Businesses

Arizona Chapter Dependent/Employee Membership Scholarship

If you or your parent or guardian is a member of the American Society of Travel Agents in Arizona then you are eligible for this scholarship. The requirements for this are that you must be a resident of Arizona, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and attending or plan to attend an Arizona College. One $1500 prize is awarded each year.

Arizona Chapter Gold Scholarship

This is an annual scholarship for students who are majoring in a travel or tourism related degree. You must already be enrolled and working toward your degree to be considered for this scholarship. $1500-$3000 is awarded annually.

The Arizona Community College Scholarship

This is a good scholarship for those enrolled in a community college. Preference is given to students who have a history of community service and volunteer work in their community. $500 is awarded annually under this program.

Anne Lindeman Memorial Scholarship

Every year, this foundation awards three students $1000 towards their education. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be enrolled at a four-year Arizona university, and you must be pursuing a degree in the health sciences, social sciences, or education.

J. Wilmar Mirandon Scholarship

This is a scholarship that is available to Juniors and Seniors who are attending the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, Arizona State University West, or Northern Arizona University. This scholarship is for business majors with a strong academic record and a history of leadership abilities. $1000 is awarded per year.

American Legion Scholarships:

American Legion Auxiliary Department of Arizona Health Care Occupation Scholarships

This scholarship is available to students who attend either two-year or four-year universities in Arizona. A minimum of $400 is warded for each scholarship. You must be an Arizona resident and have financial need. Preference is given to students who have a veteran in their immediate family and are pursuing a degree in the health occupation fields. If you qualify or this, you may want to look into other nationwide military scholarships.

American Legion Auxiliary Department of Arizona Nurses’ Scholarship

The qualifications for this scholarship are similar to those of the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Arizona Health Care Occupation Scholarship. This scholarship, however, is reserved for students pursuing a nursing degree. You must be an Arizona resident and have financial need. Preference is given to students with a veteran in their immediate family. The minimum award amount is $500. If you qualify for this scholarship, you may also want to look into other nationwide nursing scholarship programs.

American Legion Auxiliary Department of Arizona Wilma Hoyal-Maxine Chilton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is only available to students attending one of Arizona’s three State Universities. To qualify, you must be an Arizona resident and have financial need. This scholarship is for students pursuing a degree in the fields of political science, social services, special education, or public policy and administration. Preference is given to students whose immediate family includes an honorably discharged veteran. Minimum award each year is $1000.

Others:

Phoenix Chapter 67 Scholarship

This is available to both high school seniors and currently enrolled college students who are pursuing (or planning to pursue) degrees in the fields of industrial technology, manufacturing technology, or manufacturing engineering technology. This is available to students at both two year and four year colleges. One $1000 scholarship is awarded each year.

Arizona Counselor of the Year Scholarship

This is a program for high school seniors. If you had a high school counselor who had a significant impact on your life, you might consider nominating them for Arizona Counselor of the Year. If your counselor is selected, you will be awarded a $500 scholarship to put toward your college education.

Paying for college doesn’t have to be a burden with so many scholarships and grants available. In addition to those listed above, you should also strongly consider the nationwide grants and scholarships. The most popular of these is the Pell Grant. The first step for applying for the Pell Grant and many of the above grants and scholarships is to fill out a FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This can be found at Fafsa.ed.gov

    Hello, I am currently looking for grants to help get myself back into school. I am looking at NAU online, SCC, or Devry online. I have been in the corportate workforce for 8 years and am now finding the need to go back and finish my degree. Working full time at a world leading IT Security company, i have gained a lot of corporate experiences to help my career. What i really need to further my career, is a degree in business. Just about 30 credits to go till i have a degree!
